Precautions to take while Playing Sports with Epilepsy

People with a diagnosis of epilepsy are sometimes hesitant to participate in sports for fear that such activities may increase the risk of seizures. The truth is for the vast majority of epilepsy patients, the benefits of playing most sports far outweigh risks. However, here are some precautions to take while playing sports with epilepsy.

When downhill skiing, use the beginner or intermediate trail depending on your skill level and always use the harness on the ski lift. Never ski alone.

When roller blading or biking, make sure you are wearing all the protective gear – knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet.

With swimming or water sports, always have a buddy with you, wear a well-fitting life vest and a medical alert necklace or bracelet.

With contact sports such as soccer, football, or hockey, consider what would happen if you do experience a seizure while playing, make sure to wear the right protective gear, and also consult your doctor to get clearance to participate in the game.

Regardless of the sport you choose to participate in, it is important to listen to your body and not overexert yourself. Take frequent breaks while playing and drink plenty of water to ensure you are well hydrated.

Sports such as rock climbing, sky diving, mountain climbing, or hang gliding that require full concentration and where any loss of consciousness could result in serious injury are best avoided.

Research shows that staying physically fit can reduce the risk of seizures. With a little planning and application of the above precautions to your sport of choice, the right balance between staying safe and staying active can be easily be achieved.
